Winter is on our doorsteps and this is heaven for all the surfers that live here. For most of them this is the reason that they live on this island. Slowly the days get less windy and the swell more powerful due to the difference in the weather system. Last month we have had waves on all sides of the island. September started off with some really nice waves on the east . Playa Blanca in Puerto del Rosario has some really nice waves for all levels. The more advanced guys have had some good waves on the reefbreaks on the eastside. Half this month the North Shore started to work. Spots like el Hierro and the Bubble have had some good conditions for the time of the year. With the school we have found some perfect conditions with no one out on the secret spots.
The first really big swell arrived 2 weeks ago, together with the spring tide it left some nice impressions and even traces on the island. Harbour wall got shut off because the ocean moved some big rock and left them on the street. On those big days, Rocky Point is the place that still works together with Flagbeach. Places like Cotillo and the North Shore are nice to look at but it will be suicide to go out for a paddle with swells that big, lots of wind and big differences in the tides. Next month we will see calmer days with less wind and more swell. The closer we get to the winter the better it gets.
The beginning of the winter season started off good, lets hope we get the same conditions as last winter, which was the best since 14 years some locals say. Whatever the forcast, we know we can find a good surfspot every day.
You don’t want big waves here, just no wind. As I write this, the big storm passed 2 days ago and right now is the first moment without wind. So in about an hour we go and look for a nice clean reefbreak.
Stay save and enjoy,
Oscar Schenk,
